Laser vs dermabrasion removal

Technology

Common questions we’re asked about removal treatment here at NAAMA include:

  • “What is the fastest tattoo removal?”
  • “Can exfoliation remove tattoos?"
  • "How can I remove my permanent tattoo without laser treatment?”

  • If you’ve never had a tattoo removed, you might not know what options are available. In this brief guide, we explore dermabrasion tattoo removal vs laser.

    What is dermabrasion tattoo removal?

Dermabrasion tattoo removal uses a high-speed brush or wheel to essentially ‘sand away’ the layer of skin above your tattoo in order to get to the tattoo and remove it. As with most other tattoo removal methods, it would require more than one treatment.

Dermabrasion is an incredibly invasive form of tattoo removal, and because of the way it leaves skin open and raw, it will also leave you exposed to infections and skin damage.

Because it is an aggressive form of removal, dermabrasion can often lead to scarring. It is also not a good choice for large tattoo pieces because of the abrasive methods - and it can’t be tailored around skin type or tattoo colour.

Our low-energy laser significantly reduces any chance of blistering, scarring or lasting damage, which means less downtime between treatments and fast tattoo removal results.

    What is laser tattoo removal?

Laser tattoo removal uses fast pulses of light to blast the ink particles contained within the layers of skin so that they can be easily broken down by the body’s immune system and flushed out.

Our bodies identify ink as a foreign object, and so will try to remove it. In the case of tattoos, the ink is too large for the body to remove, which is why only blasting the ink into much smaller particles will remove it. The laser does not pierce the skin in the same way that dermabrasion does, but after the laser treatment the skin can have a ‘frosted’ white effect and some soreness that will go away within a couple of days.

After every session here at NAAMA, we apply medical-grade dressings that must stay on for 72 hours. These dressings help ensure the best healing conditions for your skin, keeping the area cool, calm, covered and hydrated.

Our unique laser technology is known for being gentle and relatively pain free, with a unique low-energy and high-pulse speed combination that blasts the ink at a high rate while causing minimal pain. This world-class technology also means there’s less downtime between treatments, enabling you to get your body art removed (or faded) quicker.

Why is laser tattoo removal better than dermabrasion?

Laser tattoo removal is better than dermabrasion tattoo removal for a number of reasons:

  • Laser tattoo removal is safer, meaning you’re much less likely to end up with an infection or raw, exposed skin.
  • Dermabrasion commonly leads to scarring, while scarring from laser removal is incredibly rare.
  • Laser wreaks less havoc on your body, using light pulses as opposed to abrasive brushes or wheels .
