Tattoo Removal Is Rising: What New Data Reveals About Today’s Clients

Tattoo Removal Trends: Who’s Removing Tattoos and Why

Tattoos remain hugely popular, but tattoo removal is growing just as quickly. As people’s lifestyles, careers, and personal styles evolve, many are choosing to remove or modify existing tattoos.

Recent industry data highlights several trends showing who is seeking tattoo removal and the reasons behind it.

Younger Generations Are Leading Tattoo Removal

Millennials and Gen Z represent the majority of tattoo removal clients. Around 38% of people seeking removal are in their 30s, while 29% are in their 20s.

Because younger generations are more likely to get tattoos earlier in life, it’s natural that many later decide to change or update them.

Visible Tattoos Are Removed Most Often

Nearly half of tattoos removed are located in highly visible areas, including the forearms, hands, neck, face, and ears.

These placements can affect professional opportunities or personal confidence, leading many people to remove or fade tattoos in these areas.

Black Ink Is the Most Common to Remove

About 75% of tattoos treated for removal are black ink. Black pigment responds particularly well to laser technology, making it one of the easiest colors to remove compared with brighter inks.

Skin Type Matters in Tattoo Removal

A large portion of tattoo removal clients fall within Fitzpatrick skin types III and IV, which range from fair to light brown skin tones. This highlights the importance of experienced practitioners who can adjust laser settings for different skin types to ensure safe, effective treatment.

Tattoo Removal Is About Change, Not Regret

For many people, tattoo removal isn’t about regret—it’s about change. Clients often choose removal due to career shifts, evolving personal style, or the desire to replace an older tattoo with new artwork.

As laser technology continues to improve, tattoo removal has become a reliable way for people to update their ink and make room for what comes next.
